Intrusive Investigation
Intrusive investigations that we offer include trial pitting, cone penetration testing (CPT), geotechnical and geophysical testing, borehole sampling and monitoring well installation. A desk study and surface geophysical survey are used to plan the on-site risk assessment and to structure an effective, cost efficient intrusive investigation. Contaminant sources and pathways such as underground storage tanks and drainage ducts, identified from the surface geophysical results, can be targeted. ‘Ground truthing’ can also be performed in areas of similar geophysical response, where a single borehole may be sufficient to determine ground conditions over a large area.
The most effective in-ground testing and sampling in soft ground is conducted by direct push technology, which involves pushing sensors into the ground attached to a data acquisition system. This allows the determination of in-situ subsurface soil and ground characteristics without the generation of investigation derived waste. Various probes can be deployed providing information on soil and ground water characteristics. Soil vapour, ground water and continuous sealed soil core samples can also be obtained using a direct push system.
Talpa can also offer shell and auger and rotary drilling where required and conduct concrete coring, full sample Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), windowless sampling and install fully cased boreholes.
Talpa are able to conduct a full risk assessment based on data collected using the Contaminated Land Exposure (CLEA) model.
